Spike the Ultra Dinosaur, an Imaginext toy from Fisher-Price, will roar the pre-historic world back to life. Blinking eyes,  flashing lights, and grunting dino speak make this huge  green remote-control dinosaur an excellent and fun companion for adventurous play. Spike is rugged and curious and has a quirky personality that will draw children ages three through 10 into an exciting world of their own imagining.



A Fearsome New Friend
This awesome oversized, plastic dinosaur stands 27 inches tall, with gnarly teeth, textured green skin, a yellow underbelly, and plenty of serious spines. Spike will make any young dino-enthusiast swoon. You'll need to snap Spike's legs and tail into place before he is ready to roam the Earth. The instruction booklet offers a nice illustration and these pieces are color coded to prevent confusion.

One thing you have to make sure of is that all three connection points on each front leg are securely attached, otherwise Spike will struggle to walk. Another thing parents will want to take care of is to fully charge the included NiMH rechargeable battery before their kids get their hands on this dinosaur, a process which may take up to four hours. You'll enjoy the long life of this power solution with all the use Spike will be getting. Like many other great christmas toys, the convenient wireless remote requires three AA batteries (not included) for operation.

Spike is Very Innovative and Easy to Control

As soon as your kid will turn him on, the spikes on this long-necked dinosaur's back and the tail light up, and he starts blinking his eyes. Big, kid-friendly buttons on the durable remote control will let your child make Spike Ultra Dinosaur turn left or right, walk forward, and swing his neck around. Spike can be a little tricky to maneuver at first , but with only a few moments of practice, he becomes incredibly easy to control.

Pressing down any one of the four middle buttons triggers a new action. Your kid can pick between having him stand on his hind legs, hanging his head low or swinging his neck around while unleashing a huge roar. There is another button to control the motion of his jaw. Your kid will spend hours of pure enjoyment practicing combining movements to snatch up the plastic boulders off the ground or toss them in the air (a skill we never perfected). Believe it or not, there's even a mystery button that lets Spike pick any motion he wants to perform. Your child can press it again and again to get a sense of his playful nature. There are two sounds modes: continuous background music accompany play or just hearing occasional growls, snorts, and roars.

Adventurous and Durable 

The well-crafted Spike was still going strong, even after hours of our vigorous testing. We put him through a number of test, like crashing him into table legs while trying to make him crawl over obstacles that were simply too high. Although he might not have been happy about the way we dropped the remote control over and over again, he just kept right on doing all those dinosaur things that make him such a fun addition to any family. While Spike the Ultra Dinosaur held up well in the face of vigorous use, he could eventually succumb to the rough reality of enthusiastic play and be damaged if your kid pull apart his otherwise sturdy joints or sit on him.

Spike's large size makes him an ideal outdoor playmate. However, make sure to warn your kids that he shouldn't play in streams or jump in puddles since he is battery-operated. Cooperative kids will just love putting their heads together to think up new places for their new friend dinosaur to explore. For smaller children, the height and length that make Spike the Ultra Dinosaur so much fun may make it hard to carry him around, especially if they are going a far off relative's house. We have to admit that while this dinosaur is recommended as a companion for children three through 10, even adults are likely to be charmed by Spike's fun-loving personality.  We sure were!
